Position: Archivist for the Black Experience
Reports to: University Archivist

Northwestern University Libraries seek an archivist to join University Archives, a unit of Distinctive Collections, to take a leadership role in documenting the African American experience at Northwestern University and to provide outreach for the collection to students, faculty, staff and the Evanston community. The Archivist is responsible for developing the scope of the collection, a plan for adding additional resources to the collection, directly ensures the processing of records, and implements innovative methods to ensure the promotion of the collections to the University community and the wider world. In addition, the person in this position works with, and builds on the existing collections in the University Archives to create a parallel, seamless group of archival holdings. Provides reference and instruction for students, faculty, alums and external guests, on and off-site. This is a three year term position with the potential to be extended.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

Archival Skills
• ALA-accredited master’s degree or master’s degree in information science program or in archival administration, or equivalent 1-3 years of relevant experience in library or archival work.
• Knowledge and understanding of archival theory and practice, national standards, relevant legal and ethical regulations and best practices that govern the arrangement, description and use of archival materials, including EAD, DACS, and MPLP.
• Experience in accessioning, arrangement, processing and description of archives, manuscripts, and multi-format collections, including audiovisual and photographic materials.
• Strong technology skills, including familiarity with content management systems such as ArchivesSpace, or an ability and willingness to learn new technologies independently
• Knowledge of current and emerging practices for preserving and providing access to archival materials in all formats.
• Sensitivity to matters of confidentiality, copyright, and other policy and legal aspects of managing and providing access to personal information, creative works and other archival materials.

Leadership/Management

• Excellent and demonstrated written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Customer focus, ethics and integrity, good judgment, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, donors, and patrons.
• Evidence of successful, innovative, and inclusive program planning, outreach and public speaking skills.
• Familiarity with preparing proposals for external funding and for institutional development.

Team Library
• Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse students, faculty, and staff in a library environment.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Readiness to participate in library planning and committees, and in Distinctive Collections team projects.
• Potential to meet the library’s requirement for scholarship, professional service, and leadership.

Job Conditions
• Position requires some night and weekend work to conform to library public services schedules and to support campus events; and occasional travel out of state for similar purposes.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to drive moderate distances to visit donors, transport materials, and work in various campus and off-site locations. Ability to lift archival boxes up to 40 lbs. required.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
• B.A. or M.A. degree in public history, African American Studies, or related field, or substantial knowledge demonstrated through experience and formal projects.
• Familiarity with the African American community at Northwestern and in Evanston, both historical and current.
• Experience with creating oral history projects.
