Position Summary: Librarians in the WI Department of Corrections are responsible for management of the library functions and directing the library program located at institutions/facilities Statewide. This includes responsibility for the operation of the institution’s library collections, media center and law library. Correctional libraries are statutorily required to provide access to law libraries in order to provide inmates with meaningful access to the courts. The institution or facility library provides support to education, serving as a source for recreational reading, and assisting inmates in gaining the skills that they will need to succeed academically upon release. In the administration of correctional libraries, it will be necessary to perform job duties associated with the types of daily operations encountered in academic, public or special library settings.
A current vacancy is located at the Redgranite Correctional Institution, Redgranite, WI (Waushara Co.). Anticipated vacancies at Fox Lake Correctional Institution, Fox Lake, WI (Dodge Co.) and Columbia Correctional Institution, Portage, WI (Columbia Co.) In addition to these vacancies, the register created from this recruitment may also be used to fill other vacancies over the next 6 to 12 months or longer.

The Department of Corrections administers Wisconsin’s state prisons, community correctional centers, and juvenile corrections programs. It supervises the custody and discipline of all prisoners in order to protect the public and seeks to rehabilitate offenders and reintegrate them into society.
The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.
Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.
Note: A well-qualified candidate will have a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution or an equivalent combination of Library related education, training and experience.
Qualifications: Education, training and experience in preparation for performing library job duties, as follows:
- Current classification and cataloging practices and systems
- Current library application of computer technology
- Current reference sources and procedures
- Current audiovisual equpiment and materials
- Law library collections, legal reference materials, resources and research methods
- Library administration, budgeting and purchasing methods
- Planning, developement, provision of, literacy or specialized Library programs or services
- Current collection development and acquisition methods, including Wisconsin inter-library loan guidelines
