Job Description: Director, Decorah (IA) Public Library

The Decorah Public Library is seeking a dynamic, creative and motivated individual to serve as Library Director. This individual should be someone with a collaborative mindset who is passionate about community involvement and is able to manage all areas of library service.


The Director will have the opportunity to lead and support the library’s service-oriented staff to further the goals of the library in the Decorah and greater community. The Director reports to the Library Board of Trustees and is responsible for the administration of all library functions, goals and policies established by the Board. The Director is also responsible for the facilities, financial management, and library personnel, under the governance and oversight of the Board. The Director is expected to provide leadership within the library, the community, and the library profession. The Director serves as the official representative of the Decorah Public Library. As an employee of the City of Decorah, the Director works closely with the mayor and city council.

Director must hold a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. In lieu of the Master’s in library science, the candidate must have or be able to obtain at least State Library of Iowa Public Library Director Certification Level IV. Director must have previous experience working in a library, including work with at least one of the following areas: budgeting, personnel management, and/or collection management. Director must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to prepare clear and detailed reports and presentations. Desired Qualifications

A Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited program preferred but not required.
Demonstrated application of library and information science techniques and procedures, including knowledge of library systems and databases
Knowledge of principles of personnel management
Ability to develop and manage the annual library budget
Knowledge of current library technologies and emerging trends (such as social media)
Ability to supervise and motivate others, including the ability to evaluate the work of others and to delegate responsibility
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, employees, city administrative and elected officials, and members of the public


Develops and administers policies concerning library operations, budgets, personnel, and programs
In conjunction with staff, facilitates collection management through acquisition and deselection of materials
Supervises maintenance of library physical plant, including equipment and furnishings
Conducts regular staff meetings; provides regular evaluation and coaching of staff members
Develops, implements, and evaluates long and short term goals and objectives
Prepares and presents monthly and annual financial and statistical reports (as appropriate) for Library Board of Trustees, City of Decorah, and State Certification
Prepares agenda (with supporting materials) and attends and provides content updates for monthly Library Board of Trustees meetings
Maintains communication and coordinates planning with the “Friends of the Decorah Public Library” Board

Salary and Benefits
