Position Summary:

The Historic Site Manager has responsibility for daily operations of an historic site. The Site Manager, under the direction of the Director, Southwest Historic Sites, is the public face of the Wisconsin Historical Society in the community and embodies the Society’s service and outreach mission. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that the site operates considering the safety of visitors, staff, collections and property. The incumbent handles opening/closing procedures, addresses immediate security concerns, serves as a lead worker for interpreters/docents, oversees the execution of programs and special events; and reports problems related to personnel, IT, retail and facilities. The Site Manager will participate in the development of exhibits and programs during the off season, and efforts to handles all third party facility rentals. This position reports to the Southwest Historic Sites Coordinator, Division of Museums and Historic Sites.

Qualifications:

A well-qualified applicant may have a master’s degree in Museum Studies, Public History, American history or a related field and/or experience with many, but not necessarily all, of the following

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Experience managing a historic site (e.g. develop and administer site budget, develop public programs and manage events, develop and manage interpretive plans, etc.)

Experience supervising staff and volunteers (create work plan for staff, hire and train staff, evaluate staff performance, etc.)

Experience working with museum/historic site collections (develop exhibits, maintain historic property, etc.)

Development and implementation of program calendars, staffing plans, and marketing plans

Experience developing and implementing museum-based education programs

Ability to use computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel)

Effective written and oral communication skills

Organizational skills and ability to plan ahead in order to handle multiple tasks and meet rigid deadlines without direct supervision

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public, other employees, and staff at other state agencies
