Duties: Under supervision provide information and references to children and parents using both print and electronic resources. Provide reader’s advisory services including compiling and updating booklist and using collection development aids. Instruct patrons in the use of library resources both print and electronic. Conduct tours of the branch and design and give presentation about library services to children and young adults. Plan, produce publicize, conduct and evaluate a wide variety of programs such as early literacy story times, book clubs, family story times, and special community events. Implement and evaluate system wide programs such as the summer learning challenge and library card campaign. Establish and maintain working relations with schools and other community organizations to promote library services to students, teachers and parents. Responsible for all phases of collection development including evaluating, ordering, deselecting and processing. Develop and evaluate special collections. Seek outside support for library programs. Oversee that exhibits, displays, and bulletin boards are set up and maintained. Supervise and train volunteers. Maintain records and prepare reports. Attend workshops, meetings, and training courses as assigned. Perform related duties as required.

LOCATION: Richard J. Daley 3400 S. Halsted

DAYS OFF: Sunday and one day during the week

SHIFT: Will be required to work some Evenings and Saturdays

HOURS: 37.5 hours per week to be scheduled during normal unit hours

Mon & Wed 10-6, Tues & Thurs 12-8, Fri & Sat 9-5, Sun Closed



Graduation from an accredited American Library Association college or university with a Master’s degree in Library Science or an approved foreign credential evaluation.

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

(a) Experience planning, publicizing and presenting programs

(b) Work experience or coursework in Children Services

(c) Work experience or coursework in early childhood education

(d) Knowledge of Collection Development tools for children

(e) Conducting research on bibliographic data using library databases and the internet

(f) Experience working or volunteering for an educational literacy program – ie. Jumpstart, America Reads etc.

(g) Digital competencies in production software skills
(h) Knowledge of Children’s literature
