Under the general supervision of the Manager of Library Services, the LTE Information and Access Services Specialist will be responsible for the student experience with the Library. The Specialist is responsible for managing all aspects of circulation of library resources, delivery of library instruction and reference service in the Library and throughout campus, will participate in campus-wide collaborative efforts when appropriate, and outreach and promotion of the Library.
This is a limited-term position through June 30, 2018, which may be extended.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Create, develop, curate, deliver, and evaluate library and/or information literacy instruction for classrooms, workshops, and/or online tutorials on a variety of topics.
• Design, develop, curate, and maintain subject matter and library services guides using LibGuides (or similar), and/or paper guides when appropriate.
• Assist in maintaining all aspects of library website using LibApps suite (or similar).
• Develop relationships with faculty to regularly implement library instruction within appropriate classes, assist faculty in the creation of research assignments, and to offer just-in-time research/reference assistance at remote campus locations.
• Provide reference and research assistance on campus and virtually using phone, e-mail, chat, and text services.
• Develop, implement, and market community outreach, including offering information services within the district at public and high school libraries.
• Ensure a superior student/patron experience in all areas of access services by providing prompt, helpful, and courteous customer service and by maintaining a neat and organized space at customer access points and within the stacks.
• Ensure that shelving is done accurately and in a timely manner.
• Assist the Manager of Library Services with training, guidance, and supervision of workstudy students assigned to circulation and shelving duties.
• Assist in all functions, processes, communications, and applications related to interlibrary loan and hold requests.
• Assist in all aspects of reserves services, including the promotion of this service to faculty.
• Check returned items for damage and recommend repair or replacement as necessary.
• Track overdue items and outstanding fines; bill for items and/or place holds as appropriate.
• Engage in all initiatives on campus in which the Library can play an active role or in which library resources can be of assistance.
• Examples of current collaborative initiatives include:
o Non-textbook course materials (OER): Work with faculty to identify appropriate databases and other library resources, and work with the Manager of Library Services and other OER experts on campus to identify and curate open resources.
o Competency based education: Work closely with the Manager of Library Services, the Resource Management Specialist, deans, and faculty to identify, acquire, and maintain appropriate resources to support competency based education and test preparation materials.
o Professional development: Work with the professional development committee to maintain a LibGuide to curate professional development materials, links, and subscriptions, and continue to assist in the continued professional development efforts of Nicolet College.
• Assist in, and occasionally lead, library event planning, specifically including but not limited to National Library Week and Banned Books Week activities, and seek out other opportunities, including collaboration with area libraries and groups.
• Assist in creating relationships with all relevant departments within the college and with promotional and/or marketing efforts, including using appropriate social media to promote the Library’s resources, services, and events.
• Assist the Resource Management Specialist as needed and when appropriate with duties such as processing, inventory, and weeding, and collaborate on the selection of resources.
• Assist the Manager of Library Services to develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and best practices.
• Stay informed on trends in the field and constantly seek new ways to effectively serve the Nicolet College community information and access needs.
• Provide recommendations regarding information services technology and/or training opportunities.
• Maintain relevant statistical records.
• Inventory and maintain adequate supplies.
• Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Awareness of current trends and technologies in libraries and higher education.
• Knowledge of library principles, practices, and procedures, especially regarding access and instructional aspects.
• Awareness of ALA/ACRL/WLA/WAAL standards and suggested best practices in library instruction and information literacy.
• Ability to use a computer and standard office software, as well as library specific software such as Sirsi ILS or similar and LibGuides or similar.
• Demonstrated ability to perform library instruction.
• Ability to interact and communicate effectively with employees and the general public.
• Ability to assign work and offer constructive guidance to student workers.
• Awareness of applicable laws and guidelines in interaction with students and student workers, including ALA code of ethics, FERPA, and employment laws regarding harassment, diversity, disability accommodation, and inclusion.
• Ability to travel to other district outreach locations as needed, typically within 40-50 miles.
• May be required to concentrate on complex tasks with distractions including noise and physical activity in the immediate area.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to office conditions and office equipment, including computer, telephone, copiers/printers, reports, and files.
• The employee will be constantly required to sit, talk, hear, and type/write.
• The employee will be very frequently required to stand and walk. The employee will be required to occasionally travel between buildings over uneven terrain and sometimes in inclement conditions.
• The employee will be required to touch/handle/grasp objects (using hands and fingers) and reach with hands and arms.
• The employee must often bend or squat and lift and/or push up to 40 pounds (or more with assistance) of boxes and books, and handle heavy carts.
• The employee will be required to speak and hear in person as well as using a telephone, webcam, and/or recording device.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, far, and field of vision.
• This position requires regular and punctual employee presence and occasional travel.
• MLS, MIS, MLIS, or equivalent degree required.
• Minimum of three (3) years of related work experience in a library required. Preference given to academic library experience.
• Strong preference given to candidates with experience developing and presenting library instruction sessions, creating student engagement activities in a library environment, and creating and maintaining LibGuides and the use and implementation of other LibApps tools.
• Experience with multi-departmental collaborative activities, especially curriculum delivery initiatives, preferred.
This position is contingent upon budget approval by the Nicolet College District Board in June 2017.
The typical starting pay range is $19.17 – $20.85 per hour, commensurate with education and experience. Includes a comprehensive benefits package.
