INTERLIBRARY LOAN AND DOCUMENT DELIVERY SERVICES UNIT
Delivery Services (ILL & DDS) is a unit within Access Services that provides centralized scanning and interlibrary lending services for the University of Washington. The unit is comprised of two offices, one located in the UW Health Sciences Library and the other located in Suzzallo and Allen Libraries. ILL & DDS processes approximately 147,000 resource sharing requests annually.
Reporting to the Director of Access Services, the Head, Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services leads a collaborative, user-oriented team to provide all UW resource sharing services, including interlibrary loan, consortial sharing, article scanning, course instruction scanning, and fee-based Document Delivery for unaffiliated users. The Head also works closely with the Collections and Content Strategy (CCS) unit to assess ILL usage data to inform local collections decisions and to manage ILL-related budgets.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
• Provides overall leadership and management over unit operations, programs, and services. Hires, trains, supervises, leads, and mentors 8.75 FTE of staff and approximately 15 FTE of student employees
• Thinks strategically about user needs in accordance with the Libraries Mission, Vision, Values and Strategic Agenda
• Establishes unit objectives, programs, policies and projects. Designs and implements unit staffing and workflow organization to support high-volume, rapid operations
• Monitors budget, prepares budget recommendations, proposes and implements budget re-structuring as appropriate
• Assesses Resource Sharing Programs service quality. Monitors UW and non-UW users’ satisfaction and makes changes responsive to user needs
• Maintains accurate operating and statistical records. Prepares detailed statistical reports for reporting, service assessment and collection management purposes
• Manages all activities in support of Orbis-Cascade resource sharing services. Works closely with the Orbis Cascade staff and libraries to provide efficient access to regional resources
• Monitors technological developments relating to all ILL & DDS services with an eye toward innovation and service improvement. Makes recommendations for purchase of new equipment and software
• Works with other libraries and commercial vendors to enhance document access
• Participates in regional, national, and international resource sharing discussions. Maintains awareness of commercial vendor developments relevant to resource access
• Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree
• A minimum of two years of experience providing interlibrary loan, document delivery, or consortial borrowing services
• Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent user-centered services in an academic library setting
• Evidence of flexibility and creativity in responding to rapidly changing technologies and user needs
• Strong oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, enthusiasm for instruction and communicating emerging issues
• Demonstrated experience working well with colleagues
• Demonstrated experience using technology to communicate and manage online content
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace
• Three years of progressively more responsible experience providing interlibrary loan and document delivery services in an academic setting, preferably in a large university or research institution
• Experience using interlibrary loan processing tools such as ILLiad, Docline, OCLC Worldcat Resource Sharing, and Alma Resource Sharing
• Experience managing staff and workflows in a complex library operation
• Excellent knowledge of local, regional and national issues relating to interlibrary loan and document delivery
• Excellent knowledge of copyright, privacy, and other legal and policy issues relating to interlibrary loan and document delivery
• Experience working with regional and/or national ILL groups
$58,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.
Position will be at rank of Assistant, Sr. Assistant or Associate Librarian, depending on qualifications and background.
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 26 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
