Chicago, IL; Librarian II- Catalog, Richard M. Daley

Duties: Prepare original cataloging for library materials in Slavic languages (including Polish and Russian), and/or Indic languages (Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu and/or other Indic-script languages), as well as English, using LC Classification schedules, LC Subject Headings, RDA, AACR2, MARC formats, OCLC, and Polaris. Evaluate and edit cataloging copy of OCLC participating libraries for use by the Chicago Public Library. Evaluate and edit authority records, both as generated by the Library’s authority control project and on an ongoing basis. Create, evaluate, and submit authority records to the Library of Congress’s NACO program. Conduct work using Cataloger’s Desktop, Classification Plus, and Microsoft Office. Attend regular meetings, workshops, and training classes; participate in library committee work and staff training; and perform related duties as assigned.

DAYS OFF: Saturdays and Sundays
SHIFT: Monday- Friday 8:30-5:00
HOURS: 37.5 hours per week to be scheduled during normal unit hours



Graduation from an accredited American Library Association college or university with a Master’s degree in Library Science or an approved foreign credential evaluation supplemented by one year of professional library experience.

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
(a) Cataloging experience
(b) Knowledge of Slavic language (ie. Polish, Russian etc)
(c) Knowledge of India language (i.e. Hindi, Gujarati etc)
(d) Authority control expereince
