Frostburg State University, Lewis J. Ort Library, seeks applications for the position of Digital Projects Librarian to coordinate the Library’s digitization program. Salary commensurate with experience (minimum $55,000) and includes University System of Maryland benefits package.

The Lewis J. Ort Library, situated in the heart of FSU’s campus, aspires to provide information resources and services that advance student-centric learning and research. The Library’s holdings include more than a half million items comprised of print books, periodicals, audio-visual materials, maps, art prints and U.S. and Maryland government documents. In addition, the Library subscribes to 60+ databases of electronic resources providing access to approximately 80,000 full-text electronic journals. Over 100,000 electronic books also are available to students, faculty, and staff for short-term use or purchase through DDA (Demand-Driven Acquisition). As one of 17 institutional members of the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions’ (USMAI) Consortium of Libraries, FSU users benefit from collaborative resource sharing programs that provide access to circulating holdings and select electronic resources from over 30 academic libraries in Maryland. Included among these collaborative initiatives is MD-SOAR, a shared digital repository platform for 11 Maryland colleges and universities.

The Ort Library is proud of its Digital Projects Lab with a state-of-the-art planetary scanner purchased in January 2017, access to a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device with redundancy, three PCs and an iMAC, also added in 2017. Although a new department created in 2014, the Library’s digital collection has already reached 980 GB with more than 35,500 files, including over 700 historic Maryland Coal Mine Maps.
Under the direction of the Library Director and in collaboration with the User Services and Library Technology Divisions, manage digital collections and implement digital projects from inception to completion. Coordinate cross-departmental project workflows and identify collection development opportunities, including seeking grant funding. Research, plan, and provide technical expertise for digital initiatives. Support digital content creation and conversion, interoperability of platforms, and integration of digital resources into library web pages, as well as opportunities for expanding digital services. Manage and promote the local instance of the MD-SOAR shared digital repository platform. Coordinate the Library’s role in the final processing of the institution’s electronic theses and dissertations. Collaborate with computing staff on technical infrastructure needed to manage a digital library. Keep current on trends in digital collections, institutional repositories, scholarly publishing, and data curation; utilize appropriate design principles, coding and metadata standards, and best practices for managing a digitization program.

Faculty members at FSU are expected to actively participate in the University’s student-learning-assessment program. Library faculty serve on relevant committees, act as liaisons to academic departments, and participate in collection development. They contribute to the Library’s web pages and assigned subject guides. Strong commitment to customer service is required. Participation in professional development and service activities is expected; Library faculty must demonstrate potential for promotion in rank and obtaining permanent status.
aster’s Degree from an ALA accredited program. At least two years of experience working with digital collections in a library, museum, or archives. Experience with digital project management and ability to multitask on initiatives at various stages. Knowledge of digital preservation practices and emerging technology. Experience with common metadata protocols and digital content management systems. Understanding of intellectual property and copyrights. Excellent analytical skills, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
