Biola University Library seeks a talented, innovative, and positive library professional to join our dynamic and collegial team of information professionals. Reporting to the Dean of the Library in a twelve-month Library Faculty position, the Scholarly Communications Librarian is responsible for advancing an extensive scholarly communications landscape on the Biola campus including digital publishing and preservation, the institutional repository (Biola Digital Commons), open access platforms, open educational resources, open data, copyright, grant funding and grant writing, and related intellectual property issues. In addition, the Scholarly Communication Librarian will engage in relevant public service activities including reference desk service, classroom instruction, and Library Liaison duties.
The position works collaboratively with staff from across Biola Library Departments, as well as across the Biola campus, to evaluate and propose new processes, workflows, programming, and services to advance scholarly communication and research.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develop policies and programming for a library-wide and university-wide scholarly communications program. Develop and implement educational programs to increase awareness of various scholarly communication topics and themes.
2. Build a community of practice across campus around open access, open culture and scholarship, and connects with allied efforts such as open research and open innovation, advocate for new models within the scholarly communication landscape.
3. Work closely with fellow library liaisons to promote faculty awareness of scholarly communication issues. Develop informational and training tools that can be used by these librarians. Conduct outreach to faculty and departments in collaboration with liaison librarians.
4. Develop and maintain a broad network of partners among faculty, scholars, graduate students, librarians, administrators, and committees on campus and external offices to inform, support, and advance the library’s scholarly
communications programs. Work with the Sr. Associate Provost’s Office to build partnerships with the Library to create a robust research culture on the Biola campus. Foremost among these projects is the creation and maintenance of a Biola Academic Research Center.
5. Design and develop workshops on digital tools, resources and best practices on digital scholarship; coordinating the development and expansion of sustainable digital scholarship services; building partnerships with other Centers, faculty and departments; connecting with and contributing to the diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility efforts; and establishing a community of practice and assessment for digital scholarship across campus.
6. Serve as the primary digital scholarship resource within the Library. Collaborate with all those involved with the Biola Digital Commons to develop policies and procedures that manage, promote, and increase the holdings of the library’s digital repository.
7. Provide campus-wide advocacy for an Open Access Policy and advance appropriate Open Access initiatives.
8. Stay informed of, and keep library faculty current with, the research life-cycle and ways that new technologies are affecting the production of scholarship, national and international trends, legislation, and pending changes in intellectual property rights, commercial and academic/research scholarly publishing, open access, digital initiatives and information technologies that affect access and preservation of scholarly information. Advise faculty, researchers and students on copyright,authors’ rights, and publishing agreements.
9. Develop initiatives that encourage and enable faculty to manage their own copyright and improve the economies of and access to published research.
10. Work collaboratively with the university’s Legal department to provide timely and accurate information of author’s rights management.
11. Serve as the lead librarian with regard to supporting grants and grant writing opportunities for librarians and faculty.
12. Provide periodic assessments of the campus environment with regard to scholarly communication issues; works to fill in the gaps around these matters, targeting specific groups, research centers, and departments.
13.Contribute service to the library and the library profession by participating in local, regional, and national professional organizations.
14.Engage in campus and community service activities as appropriate.
15.Pursue promotion in librarian rank and salary at appropriate times.
16.Perform other duties as assigned which includes instruction, subject liaison work, and reference duties.
● MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent relevant masters degree
● At least three years of professional academic library experience or equivalent
● Strong public service and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team in a collegial environment
● Experience with collection development in an academic library or equivalent.
● Demonstrated experience in working with an institutional repository
● Excellent written and oral communication skills.
● Knowledge of copyright, licensing, open access, and other intellectual property issues relevant to an academic environment
● Familiarity with current and emerging technologies and approaches used in digital scholarship
● Demonstrated ability to work collegially with faculty both within and outside of the library environment
● Successful record of achievement in serving on academic committees
● Second master’s degree or doctoral degree in a discipline relevant to Biola’s undergraduate or graduate programs.
● Demonstrated experience with promoting/developing open access policies or management of intellectual property rights
● Successful completion of grant writing experience
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience promoting, using,and managing bepress products. Also, a demonstrated record of scholarly and professional accomplishments, at the level commensurate with the university’s qualifications for Library Faculty II or III.
