Madison, WI: Reference Desk Assistant (LTE), Wisconsin Historical Society

Major tasks of the position: Assist researchers in finding materials within the WHS Library and Archives. Answer general reference questions about the use, services, and collections of all campus libraries. Instruct patrons in the use and interpretation of various paper and electronic resources, including the Library Catalog, WorldCat, the Internet, and licensed journal and reference databases. Refer reference questions to WHS Library Reference staff when available. Assistance is conducted by phone, in person, and online. Researchers include students and faculty as well as the general public researching local and family history. Special projects as assigned.

Compensation is $11/hour for this part time role.

Duties

Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively as a member of a functional team.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and verbally, with the public, supervisors and colleagues.
Attention to detail.
Knowledge of current office methods, equipment, practices and procedures including PC usage and familiarity with word processing and/or other software necessary to perform job duties.
Ability to multitask.
Ability to understand the customer’s needs and deliver services by focusing on the customer.
Ability to respond to customers and address customer complaints/problems in a timely, accurate, courteous, respective and friendly manner.
Ability to learn and use current reference databases for a diverse audience.
